A 450-strong crowd filed into the Hyatt Regency hotel downtown to attend the Helping a Hero Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Helping A Hero is a nonprofit that provides specially adapted homes for wounded veterans; the event honored volunteers who help empower the lives of wounded veterans and also raise the funds necessary to support them.

Deborah Duncan served as mistress of ceremonies and entertainment was provided by country singer Lee Greenwood, who is most well-known for his song “God Bless the USA.” U.S. Army retired specialist, Justin Lane, performed “Only A Mountain” along with an inspiring speech.

Charles W. Jenness was honored at the event, as was Houston artist Hanh Tran, who received the Freedom Award for her auctioned work of patriotic pieces raising over $100,000 for wounded Veterans. The luncheon raised $277,000.

Other award recipients included Johnny Carrabba (Freedom Award), Chesmar Homes (Pioneer Award), Robert and Kim Marling (Pillar Award), George McLellan (Eagle Award), Karen Roan McClure (Eagle Award), Stewart Title (Enterprise Award), Fishers of Men (Enterprise Award).
