PO3 (Ret.) Jennifer Penn, USN
Jennifer grew up in Chicago, IL where she was involved in a Nursing Program, Forensic Science Program, Snowball Drug Program, Band, Certified Life Guard Instructor, and CPR & BLS Instructor. She and her husband joined the Navy together. Her older and younger brothers served, too.
In December 2006, Jennifer was in the back of a Humvee when it flipped over while in route to the hospital to drop off a patient. She woke up the next morning with a sharp pain in the back of her head, a bulge in her neck, and her arm was numb. She was given the choice to leave before the end of her deployment or finish if she could bear through it. Knowing if she left it would impact her department; she stayed knowing her injuries would require surgery at some point.
Through a difficult journey of doctors and treatments, she has both brain and spinal cord injuries. She needs help with everyday living and needs assistance to bathe and eat. She is a single mom with a 21 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. Her mom and dad have put their lives on hold to help Jennifer and help take care of her daughter.
