SSG Bradley Gruetzner USA (Ret.) joined the Army in 2004 and after Basic Training was awarded the MOS 19K (Armor Crewman). He deployed to Iraq as part of Thunderhorse (C Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood). His Battalion saw action in western Baghdad, Tarmiyah, Fallujah, and Yusufiyah. During his second deployment to Iraq he was assigned to FOB Warhorse. On November 15, 2006, Bradley and his crew were ambushed while searching for terrorists who killed an Army unit a few days before. Bradley’s HUMVEE was struck by a 600 lb IED consisting of two anti-tank mines and multiple propane tanks. His vehicle was destroyed and 3 of his crew were killed instantly. Bradley’s injuries included an amputated right hand, part of his arm, multiple broken bones, severe T.B.I., and multiple internal injuries. After 40 surgeries and survivor’s guilt, Bradley struggled with the physical pain and the emotional challenges of coping with the loss of his comrades. He had bouts of post-traumatic stress and thoughts of suicide before discovering the best way to honor the soldiers he lost is to live well and serve others. Bradley decided to commit his life to helping other veterans heal and became a leader with Warrior Weekend where he spends countless hours encouraging veterans and getting them into the outdoors. Helping a Hero and Kimberlite Homes built a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath home that will allow Bradley to serve his extended family of wounded warriors and even have wheelchair bound veterans as guests in his Helping A Hero accessible home. Bradley is married to Angie and their blended family includes two daughters.
