A military couple broke ground on their new home Thursday. With the help of Helping A Hero Foundation, the couple moved from New Hampshire and found the perfect place in Bandera. Ed Matayka is a double amputee, injured during his tour in Afghanistan in 2010. His wife Karen, also an Army veteran, says this home is a brand new beginning for their family.

“It means being comfortable, being able to take care of my family,” she said. “I went from a soldier to a caregiver in the blink of an eye, and having that uncertainty was terrifying, but knowing that I’m going to have a home that is going to help my husband manage himself a little bit…means the world to me.”

Many local companies donated supplies to build the home. Helping A Hero says they hope the family can move in early 2015.
