SAN ANTONIO – It was an emotional and patriotic Monday morning in New Braunfels as the nonprofit organization Helping A Hero presented keys to its 10th homeowner locally.
Retired Marine Corps MSgt. Blaine Scott said the welcome-home ceremony for him and his family made him feel fortunate.
Scott served for more than 22 years. He was severely burned during a roadside bomb blast in Iraq in 2006. Officials with Helping A Hero said they couldn’t think of a more deserving service member for them to help get a home specifically adapted for his needs.”They’re very generous and very kind,” Scott said. “Without them, I wouldn’t have the home of my dreams and I just feel very lucky that they helped me out.”
“We built home after home for those who just told me everything about Blaine Scott and they would just say, ‘Blaine Scott changed my life,'” Helping A Hero chairman emeritus Meredith Iler said.
Scott spent his final three years in the military in the Wounded Warrior Battalion East – San Antonio Military Medical Center Detachment, where he supervised the care and transition of wounded, ill and injured Marines who were assigned to the hospital.
The family’s new home includes a Wounded Warrior guest suite so that veterans in crisis to stay with the Scott family.
“They can come here, they can relax. They can enjoy themselves. You know, my last home I wasn’t able to do that,” Scott said.
The home is also complete with mementos of Scott and wife Lilly’s 12-year-old daughter who took her own life after being bullied. The family continues fighting for others as supporters of David’s Law, which is currently making its way through the Texas Legislature.
The proposed law would stiffen the laws for cyberbullying.
The home isn’t completely free to the Scott family. They still have a mortgage a fraction of what it’s worth, but furnishings and appliances were donated by several local companies.
